Ed Schrader’s Music Beat - Jazz Mind (2012, Load Records)
Ed Schrader is a musician and comedian associated with Baltimore’s Wham City collective, known for his wild one-man shows with nothing but a floor tom and his voice. This is his first album released as a duo with Devlin Rice on bass. The music varies in style from hardcore punk to ’60s psychedelia and krautrock, and the songs are hardly ever longer than 2 minutes. The sparse instrumentation is affected by just a touch of reverb added and the effect it creates is enormous. Schrader’s voice is capable of warrior-like chanting (“Right”), smooth crooning (“Gem Asylum”), and high pitched snarling (“Sermon”). Throw in an appearance by No Age’s Randy Randall on guitar for a track and you’ve got a solid punk threesome.
